Artist Amanda Palmer
Written by Ben Gibbard
Length 4:58
Album(s) Who Killed Amanda Palmer (Alternate Tracks)

I Will Follow You into the Dark is a song by "Death Cab for Cutie", covered by Amanda Palmer both live and on the album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer (Alternate Tracks). The arrangement is very different to the original, featuring piano in stead of guitar and being played at a much lower tempo.

HistoryEdit

When Ben Gibbard, nearing age 29, wrote "I Will Follow You into the Dark" he had never lost anyone really special in his life. Growing older during an ideal and comfortable time of his life led him to begin obsessing over death, the afterlife, and the weight of his relationships. He started to take stock of the importance of the people in his life and felt a need to say something about it.

MeaningEdit

Gibbard wrote the song to deal with his problems of focusing on life by expanding his scope to include death and what comes afterward.[1]

It's just this idea that what if somebody dies and we're just floating, just stumbling around in infinite darkness, and I'm just trying to find some kind of spiritual kind of peace with myself, and the world. - Ben Gibbard[1]

LyricsEdit

Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light
Or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NO's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school
As vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son, fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NO's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me
Have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes
are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
'Cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

If heaven and hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NO's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark
